Restaurant Review : Johnnie's Dog House

Johnnie's Dog House - website - Vf
3401 Concord Pike
Wilmington, DE 19803
(855) 875-9884
Mon.-Sat., 11 a.m.-10 p.m.; Sun., 11 a.m.-8 p.m.

Service: Super friendly and helpful!  They know their product, and can help you decide.  They turn them out pretty fast, too!

Ambiance: Family-friendly! There are colorful seats and walls and the whole place just has a "fun" 1940's feel to it. The walls themselves are adorned with photographs of those who were able to eat either the Delaware Destroyer (two dogs of your choice on a 6" hoagie roll topped with macaroni and cheese, chili, grilled onions, and hot sauce) or Johnnie's Jumbo Dog (a 13", 1lb beef monster) and finish it!

Food: The menu is excellent, many choices!  The meat eaters can get beef, turkey, or kobe beef dogs.  The vegans have amazing veggie dogs they can chow down on.  Besides hot dogs, there are beef hamburgers, Dr. Praeger's California veggie burgers, sausages, veggie sweet sausages, macaroni & cheese, grilled cheese, chicken, pork... something for everyone! You do not have to worry about eating sides of cooked carrots and plain rice when you go out to eat with your meat-eating family at this joint! The vegan dogs are SO good-- even Corey was surprised how tasty the veggie dogs were!

One of my other favorite features are the STYLE of hot dogs you can get.
Corey, the meat-eater, ordered the New Jersey style dog-- a hot dog loaded with grilled potatoes, peppers and onions.  He devoured it!  I ordered a Vegan Hawaiian dog, which was topped with pineapple and potato chips.  I love potato chip and pineapple sandwiches, so I was amazed they had something like that-- it was like they were reading my stomach juices like tea leaves, haha!  Kai, the veggie child, ate a grilled cheese and french fries.  They were not overly greasy or anything you would question allowing your child to eat... and he LOVED it all!

Speaking of which, the french fries are so delectable!  You can order a side of cheese, chili, gravy, or opt for ketchup and/or malt vinegar (my favorite) at the condiments table! Awesome!

Pros: Great food, great service, food for everyone. Their vegan hot dogs are STELLAR. I also hear that their milkshakes are top notch for you vegetarians!

Cons: It is a pretty small establishment, so it can be crowded at times! Not all toppings are veggie-friendly (like the baked beans and chili). Also, if you are very particular about your vegetarian food being cooked on the same grill as actual meat, this is not the place for you.

Bottom Line: I recommend this place to EVERYONE. It is right off Rt 202, close to the Concord Mall. Give it a try!
